The Eagles prepare to head to Dallas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuxxoMjmtYg

The Eagles prepare to head to Dallas for perhaps their most important game of the season. Win, and they move into first place in the NFC East. Lose, and almost all hope of making the post season, dies.

After Dallas, the Eagles play the Los Angeles Rams, the Huston Texans and then finish up the season with the Washington Redskins.

Have the Eagles won their last meaningful game for the 2018 season?

With the victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football, have the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles won their last meaningful game?

To be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, the Eagles need to win the rest of their divisional games vs. the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. They will also need to pull off an upset over the one or both of their non-divisional games. If they win both, they’ll win the division. If they win one of those two games, along with beating both the Redskins and Cowboys, then they will need the Cowboys to lose at least one more of their games to tie the division at 9-7. With a 9-7 tie, the Eagles would hold the tie breaker and win the division.

If the Eagles don’t win the division, there’s still Wildcard hope for them, through various scenarios.

The Eagles defeat the Redskins, get to 6-6 on the season

The Eagles defeated the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football by a score of 28-13 and advancing to 6-6 on the season, moving into a tie for second place in the NFC East and inching closer to a possible playoff berth.

Redskins backup turned starting QB, Colt McCoy broke his leg early in the game, making way for Mark Sanchez to see his first action since the 2016 season. Sanchez proved to be ineffective, and will be the Redskins starter for the remainder of the 2018 season, barring injury.

The Eagles prepare to face the Redskins on Monday Night Football

The Eagles take on the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. At stake for the Eagles is remaining alive in the playoff hunt.

The Redskins come into the game with backup QB Colt McCoy, who stepped in when Alex Smith went out with a broken leg.

Will the Doug Pederson stick with the run game, or will he try to air the ball out vs. the Redskins? The answer to that question could determine the outcome of the game, and ultimately, the Eagles 2018 season.

The Eagles get some Wildcard help from Sunday’s games

The Eagles didn’t play on Sunday, but they did receive some Wildcard help with losses by both the Vikings and the Panthers.

There’s still a long way to go for the Eagles to earn a playoff spot in the 2018 post season, but they’re not out of the running, and winning the division is still a possibility as long as they win their remaining games against the Redskins and Cowboys.

After the Cowboys win vs. the Saints, what are the Eagles playoff chances?

After the Dallas Cowboys shocked the NFL world by defeating the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football, where does that leave the Philadelphia Eagles playoff hopes? The Eagles are still in the playoff race, though just barely.

The Eagles will need to win all of their three remaining NFC East games to keep hope alive. That would make their record 8-6. That leaves two non-divisional games to worry about. The Rams and the Texans. For the sake of day dreaming, let’s just say that the Eagles split those two and go 1-1, making their final record, 9-7.

The Cowboys final three opponents are the Colts, Buccaneers and Giants. If the Cowboys win all three of those games, their record would be 10-6 (with the presumed loss to the Eagles in week 14). 10-6 would win the division. So, for the Eagles to win the division (in this scenario), they would need the Cowboys to lose at least 1 of those final 3 games. Either that, or the Eagles would need to win all 5 of their remaining games, which would result in a 10-6 tie with the Eagles winning the tie-breaker.

Depending on how the other games play out, that could actually result in the Cowboys getting the 5th seed and having to play the Eagles in Philadelphia, in the Wildcard round.

Of course, A LOT has to go right for the Eagles for this scenario to actually come true, and very little has actually gone right for the Eagles in the 2018 season.

Eagles defeat the Falcons 18-12 in Season Opener

Lightning delayed the festivities at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday by about 45 minutes, but it didn’t put a damper on the unveiling of the Super Bowl LII Championship Banner.

The Eagles got off to a sluggish start in Thursday’s game, playing to a 6-3 halftime deficit. In the third quarter though, Doug Pederson reached into his bag of tricks to jump start the offense and called “Philly, Philly”, a play reminiscent of the “Philly Special” from Super Bowl LII in which Nick Foles caught a TD pass from Trey Burton.

In “Philly, Philly” though, the pass came from Nelson Agholor and went for 15 yards and a 1st down. It would eventually lead to a 1 yard touchdown run by RB Jay Ajayi, his first of two on the night.

The defense played well, allowing the Falcons to score only once in 5 trips into the Redzone, a 9 yard touchdown by Tevin Coleman. The ensuing extra point failed after hit the upright.

This game was eerily reminiscent of the January Divisional playoff game that these two teams played, which came down to a 4th and goal play in which Matt Ryan threw a pass to Julio Jones, and which fell incomplete. This game, too, came down to a 4th and goal play but this time with only 1 second left on the clock and again, it came down to Matt Ryan throwing a pass to Julio Jones in the endzone. This time, the opposite corner from the January game, but with the same result. Jones caught the ball this time, but landed out of bounds, to end the game.

So the Eagles get the victory and move to 1-0, going next to Tampa Bay to face the Bucs in week 2.

The Eagles start the season with a victory over Atlanta, can they finish the season with a victory IN Atlanta? That’s the goal.

Jordan Mailata makes the Eagles 53 man roster

In April when the Eagles drafted Jordan Mailata with the 233rd pick in the 7th round of the 2018 NFL Draft, very few people believed that he’d actually make the 53 man roster, some September 1st. But that’s exactly what Jordan did. His size, athleticism and the speed with which he picked up American Football dictated that the Eagles make room on the roster for him.

Jordan’s first ever football game (at any level), came in early August, in a pre-season game vs. the Steelers. He finished off the pre-season by playing 3 quarters in a winning effort against the New York Jets.

Jordan has shown great promise in the short time that he’s been in the NFL and because of that, the Eagles had to change their plans. Presumably, the plan was to give him some experience and some coaching, then release him on cutdown day and re-sign him to the 10 man practice squad. But that would have lefte him available to all other 31 teams to claim off the waiver wire. That means that starting with the Browns, any team that saw the potential in Jordan, could have stolen him away from the Eagles and both the Eagles, nor Jordan could have done anything about it. That team would have owned his rights. To avoid that possibility though, the only thing the Eagles could do, was make room on the 53 man roster for him and that’s exactly what they did.

Mailata isn’t expected to be on the active 46 man roster on gameday, at least not early in the season. This will give him more time to progress and see the game at full speed. Injuries to the offensive line could change that though.

Carson Wentz back in 11 on 11 drills, one step closer to the season opener

On December 10th, 2017, Carson Wentz dove for the endzone on a play that wouldn’t count due to a penalty. It did count in a much bigger way for the season though. It was the play where he tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee. He went on to play finish that drive, torn ligaments and all, by throwing his franchise record breaking 33rd touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery on what would be the final pass of his 2017 season. Now led by backup quarterback Nick Foles, went on to win the game, the NFC East title and eventually Super Bowl LII in Minnesota.

Fast forward to August 19th, just 8 months and 9 days later, and Carson Wentz was back at practice and participating in 11 on 11 drills with his sights set on starting the season in the September 6th season opener vs. the Atlanta Falcons. As Right Tackle Lane Johnson put it, ‘the Sheriff is back in town’.

Wentz split reps with backup and Super Bowl LII MVP, Nick Foles, who is coming off a shoulder strain that he suffered in the second pre-season game vs. the New England Patriots. Foles was throwing the ball in Sundays practice without any obvious signs of the shoulder strain bothering him.

Also preparing to start in the season opener vs. the Falcons are Darren Sproles, Jordan Hicks and future hall of famer, Jason Peters. All three appear on track to start the season on the field.

Rumors of Dallas Goedert’s broken arm were wrong

On Saturday, August 11th, the Eagles got back to practice after their Thursday night pre-season opener loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lincoln Financial Field and 35,000 Eagles faithful filled the stands to watch their Birds.

Before the practice was over, rookie Tight End Dallas Goedert had left the field with an undisclosed injury. Enter Twitter. Someone put the word out there that they’d seen Goedert with a cast on his arm and that he’d broken it in practice. Before long, the rumor was that he’d be out 6 to 8 weeks.

When asked about the ‘broken arm’ on Sunday, Goedert had a good laugh about it. “I was like, ‘I broke my arm? That’s news to me’, luckily, I was able to go right to the source.”

Goedert when on to say, “It’s pretty crazy, it’s kind of what the social media world does. People over-react. Nobody was sure. I had a broken arm, but they weren’t sure. I had this and that. People were just saying things. It was nice that I knew what was going on.”

When asked about the actual injury, Goedert said “It’s just a minor injury. Just a minor little nick. Should be back in the next day or two. Nothing serious. Just a bump and a bruise type thing, ya know?”

So there you have it, right from the horses mouth. Not a broken are, just a minor bump/bruise. Now everyone who thought the sky was falling, can come out of their shelters and enjoy the day.
